The mission of Sesame Workshop
Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization responsible for Sesame Street and much more,
leverages the power of multimedia to make their unique blend of education and entertainment accessible to children all over the world, regardless of their social or economic status.
Since 1969, the iconic Muppets of Sesame Street, originally created by Jim Henson, have been welcomed into homes, creating a beloved neighborhood that continues to delight children of all ages, including the young at heart. From the beginning, familiar feathered, furry, and smiling faces such as Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Grover, Oscar the Grouch, Mr. Snuffleupagus, Count von Count, Bert and Ernie… lived alongside humans such as Susan, Gordon, Maria, Luis, Bob, and company. The results of that magical merger have become indelibly etched on the nation’s consciousness, and represent the wonder of childhood as well as the value of quality early education.
As the years passed, more and more friends joined the Sesame Street lexicon. Today’s favorites for little ones include Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Rosita, Zoe, Telly Monster, Baby Bear, and more—all dedicated to maintaining the warm, supportive, and endlessly fascinating environment of the longest street in the world.
Reading and Sesame Street
Reading with your child is an excellent way to reconnect, strengthen bonds, and allow everyone to take a break from the whirlwind of everyday life. When you snuggle up with these Sesame Street books and discover familiar faces and places that your child already loves, you’ll help your little one strengthen skills in the learning process from an early age, while creating precious moments that will stay with your children for life.
The whole family can enjoy reading Elmo books together. Have older children take turns reading words or whole sentences, and let little ones who can’t recognize words yet “tell” parts of the story from the beautiful illustrations. Sesame Street books can help increase your children’s enthusiasm for reading, build confidence, and develop fertile imaginations.
Family reading time is also a great way to establish calming routines that let everyone relax. Read favorite Sesame Street books at nap time or quiet time, as bedtime stories, or even while you’re preparing meals to encourage a soothing and relaxed atmosphere in your home.
